It's wet and cold and less sunshine, sometimes winter can make people lose motivation. BUT if you keep at it, keep up your exercise, change your eating habits and still be able to enjoy good hearty winter meals and change your mindset - winter is actually the best time to get into shape for summer! Start now, and you won't be doing the 'summer scramble' come November when all the parties and socialising and madness starts. So think about that! Better to get started right now than wait.
Here are a few tips to help you along the way:
Keep up your exercise routine! While it might be a challenge to drag yourself out of bed when it's dark and cold outside, it'll be worth it! Your body will need to work hard to get warm and burn that extra energy that you have. Make sure you do a good warm up before hitting the road though, and if it's too cold or wet outside try hitting your local gym or doing a workout at home. There are so many great workouts that can be done from home with no equipment, let me know if you'd like me to send you some!
Stay hydrated: You might not feel like guzzling water during the cooler months but your body still needs to be hydrated. If you're struggling with the cold, opt for hot water with a wedge of fresh lemon.
Eat well: nourishing your body from the inside out is so important to keep your immune system healthy and you feeling your best. Make sure you're getting enough protein with every meal to help you feel satisfied and less likely to reach for the snacks. Dosing up on Iron, Zinc and Vitamin C are also important for your immune system so make sure you include lots of dark leafy greens and red or yellow vegetables. Try and eat seasonally if you can. Farmers Markets are a great place to find fresh, in season food that is often really well priced. Plus you'll be supporting local!
Stay positive and refocus on those goals: Winter can get a few people down. But you can avoid becoming a couch hermit with heavy meals, blocks of chocolate, and no exercise by choosing to remain positive and focusing on your longer term goals. There's nothing wrong with having a few nights in and cuddling up on the couch, but if you're starting to feel a bit average then maybe it is time to increase your activity or try something new. Set new goals for the season, and for what you want to achieve before the end of the year. Remember the consistent work you put in now will reap it's rewards come summer time and you won't need to go into 'panic mode' and work your butt off later in the year!
There are many wonderful things about winter - lots of healthy eating options and lots of exercise options as well. Join up to boxing class if you need group motivation, team up with a friend and train together so you can't get out of it and back each other, try personal training or group training etc as an option as well - having a fitness professional help show you the way, be your motivator and then give you a gentle kick up the backside when you don't do as you're supposed too can also help get you that one step closer!
Whatever you do, don't let the baggy jumpers and stretchy leggings take over! Stay healthy, lean, fit and STRONG all year round!
